From the fibro streets near the water to the newer estates off Blue Pacific Road, Deception Bay is where we spend most weeks. This page covers the parts that fail, what the law lets you do yourself, and what the visit costs to book.

For the wider fixture list, see our tap and toilet plumbing guide.

Which Part Fails in Your Tap

A washer tap closes when a rubber washer bears down on its valve seat; a mixer closes on a ceramic-disc cartridge. Knowing which one is on your bench or wall tells you what the repair involves.

Washer taps have a handle each for hot and for cold, and each handle winds around several turns. The spindle ends in a jumper valve, and the washer rides down on it to close the seat.

A mixer runs hot and cold from one lever, usually turning a quarter of a turn. When the cartridge wears out, the whole cartridge is swapped, and the new one has to match your tap's model, since every maker sizes them differently.

Still Dripping After You Turn It Off

A spout that keeps running after the tap is closed means the part that seals has given up. With a washer tap, suspect the washer or the seat; with a mixer, the cartridge.

The other places water shows each point to a different part:

  1. Around the handle or spindle

a perished O-ring or a worn spindle seal, and it leaks while the tap runs.

  2. A wet skirt or a damp cupboard below

perished O-rings, a fitting worked loose, or corrosion splitting the body.

  3. A tap that's stiff but still seals

grit or wear inside the cartridge or spindle.

Before anyone opens the tap, the water needs shutting off. Most sinks have a shut-off in the cupboard below, so one fixture goes dry and the house keeps running.

Where the tap has no shut-off of its own, close the meter's stop tap, turning it clockwise. Make sure first that nothing depending on a constant supply, like the hot water system, gets left dry while the main is off.

Old Washers and Salt Air

The suburb's tap wear splits along housing lines. Area-level figures put population growth here at 8.7 per cent between 2020 and 2025, with 1,069 dwellings approved across five years, so plenty of homes carry mixers beside older washer taps.

Deception Bay Same Day Plumbing handles both kinds, often in the same visit. Closer to the water, salt-laden bay air roughs up brass tapware and meter fittings, so taps near the foreshore corrode and seize sooner than the ones inland.

A seized stop tap can turn a simple swap into a supply repair, which is worth knowing before you book.

Who May Repair a Tap in Queensland

Queensland leaves one tap job open to unlicensed hands. The QBCC's unregulated list covers a tap's washer and jumper valve, and nothing else on the tap.

Anyone with the knowledge and skill may do that swap, and the finished work still has to comply with the standards. Everything else needs a licence.

Fitting a brand-new tap is licensed work, and the QBCC guide gives that exact job as its example of what an owner can't do alone. Every other repair, cartridge swaps included, is minor work: a licensee does it, without a permit and without a Form 4.

Renting? A dripping tap is a routine repair unless the tenancy Act calls it an emergency. Tell the owner or agent, and Queensland's tenancy rules give them a reasonable time to arrange the fix.

If the drip gets ignored, Form 11 starts the clock: the owner or agent has a minimum of seven days to remedy the breach.

What Affects the Cost of a Tap Repair

Four things drive the bill: the sort of tap, the part it needs, damage to the seat or body, and how easily each tap can be isolated. How many taps we do in one visit shifts the figure as well.

You'll see the price in a written fixed quote after we size up the job, and nothing starts until you approve it.

A body split by corrosion, a seat too worn to seal again, or a drip that survives fresh parts all point toward a new tap rather than a repair. Our tap replacement page covers choosing and fitting one, and toilet repairs covers the cistern end of the room.

Tap Questions We Get Asked

Call (07) 3524 7137

Why is my mixer tap leaking around the base?

Usually one of three: O-rings gone hard, a connection under the sink that has shaken loose, or corrosion eating through the tap body. Close the shut-off valve in the cupboard below, dry the area, and ring (07) 3524 7137 so we can confirm which.

Am I allowed to swap my own tap washer in Deception Bay?

Yes, but only the washer and jumper valve: the QBCC lists that swap as unregulated work anyone with the knowledge and skill may do, provided it meets the standards. A whole new tap stays licensed.

Does a ceramic cartridge swap need a licensed plumber?

Yes, it does. Cartridges sit outside the QBCC's unregulated list, so the repair counts as minor work for a licensee: no permit applies, and no Form 4 either.

How much water does a dripping tap waste?

Thousands of litres over a year, and the loss lands on your Unitywater bill. A drip never fixes itself, so the sooner the failed part is swapped, the sooner the meter stops ticking.

Will turning the tap off harder stop the drip?

No, it makes things worse. Cranking the handle down grinds the washer against its seat and wears both out faster, so the drip comes back sooner. The failed part has to be swapped, not squeezed.
