Testing and certifying a gas system counts as gas work, so only a licensed gasfitter may issue the certificate. What gas work covers, and the licence checks that go with it, is explained on our gas fitter page.

What a Gas System Compliance Certificate Is
A gas system compliance certificate is the licence holder's signed statement that the gas work just finished complies with the Queensland gas rules. The gasfitter hands the owner the original as soon as the job is done.
Not every gas job ends with one. The certificate follows a new gas system or a change to an existing one, not repairs and not routine servicing.
A defect notice is the other paper a gasfitter can leave behind. Where a gasfitter has a safety worry about the system in hand, the owner gets written notice of the fault.
No defect notice is needed when the fault is put right during the same visit. The certificate and the notice do different jobs, so do not expect one to stand in for the other.

Where to Ask for a Copy
Start with the paperwork you kept from the gas job, then contact the licensed gasfitter who carried out the work, since that licence holder issued the certificate. The state also keeps every lodged certificate in a searchable online register, found by property address.
For older jobs, look for a compliance plate fixed near the meter or the appliance. Plates were the standard record before July 2025.
If the gasfitter has moved on or the papers are long gone, the property search still works. A certificate lodged years ago stays on file against the address.

Owner, Gasfitter and Gas Network Operator
The original reaches the owner via the state's online portal once the gas system is complete. Where fuel gas arrives through a distribution network, a copy also goes to the gas network operator within 5 days, sent by the licence holder who did the work.
Physical plates stopped being required for most installations after July 2025. The certificate held online is now the record that counts.
So three parties can hold the same paperwork: you as the owner, the gasfitter who issued it, and the network operator where one supplies your gas. Any of those trails leads back to the certification if you ever need to prove it.

Selling, Buying or Renting With Gas Appliances
A gas compliance certificate records one completed job, while Queensland's official advice is to have appliances inspected and serviced at regular intervals by a licensed gasfitter. Between visits, the owner's job is visual only:
- Check the system regularly for corrosion, wear or damage.
- Keep anything flammable clear of appliances.
- Keep cylinders upright and away from heat or ignition, with the valve shut between uses, empty or not.
Never hunt for leaks yourself. If you can smell gas, see the gas leak repairs page for what to do, then call (07) 3524 7137.
Rentals follow their own rules. Queensland's tenancy Act lists gas leaks and a failed gas supply as emergency repairs, and requires the owner or manager to provide the place in good repair and keep it that way through the tenancy.
At the last census, 24.9 per cent of the suburb's homes were owned outright and 33.4 per cent carried a mortgage, so a large share of households rent. From a flat near the MKT centre on Bay Avenue to a house out Webster Road, the emergency repair list matters as much as any certificate.
A new cooktop is the kind of change that ends with a certificate; the details sit on the gas cooktop installation page.

Gas Certificate Questions Answered
Call (07) 3524 7137What is a gas compliance certificate?
The certificate is written confirmation from the licence holder that a finished gas system installation or alteration meets Queensland's requirements. The licensed gasfitter behind the work issues it, and the owner receives the original as soon as the job is done.
When do I get a gas compliance certificate in Deception Bay?
Straight after the gas work at your property is finished. The gasfitter issues it through the state's online system, and nothing further is needed from you.
Does every gas job come with a compliance certificate?
No, not every job does. The certificate belongs to a new gas system or a change to an existing one, not to repairs or servicing. Where a gasfitter finds a safety fault instead, you receive a defect notice describing it, unless the gasfitter corrects it then and there.
How do I find my gas compliance certificate?
Check the paperwork you kept from the gas job first, then ask the licensed gasfitter who carried out the work. The state also keeps every lodged certificate in a searchable online register, so a copy can be tracked down years later by property address.
Is a gas leak an emergency repair for a renter in Deception Bay?
Yes, gas leaks count as emergency repairs under Queensland's tenancy Act, along with a failed gas supply and any essential appliance that cooks, heats or supplies hot water. The Act requires the owner or manager to arrange urgent repairs, and the tenant reports the fault straight away.
